A message from Mrs Thomas

Wednesday 15th of July 2020

Good morning children,

It was fantastic seeing the Year 6's in school this week. I am so pleased the children had the opportunity to see one another before they go off to their different secondary schools.

We held a socially distanced picnic and a 'virtual' leaver's assembly.

I couldn't resist putting some of these pictures up!

Good morning children,

It has been a very busy week in school. We are completing tasks for this academic year whilst trying to prepare for September.

Staff have begun to think about how they will welcome you back in September and which topics they will teach. I know Miss Williams is getting particularly excited about hers!

I have had meetings with both our new Year 3 and 4 teacher Miss Weeks as well as with Mrs King our new Executive Head teacher. Both ladies are lovely and very excited about being part of our fantastic school.

Good afternoon children,

I hope you are all keeping busy at home. This morning I have been speaking to Mrs Hood about English in our school. I am pleased that lots of you are accessing Spelling Shed and the Rising Stars reading books at home.

The Reading Ambassadors have been recommending new reading books for our reading corners.

Good morning,

Thank you for your fantastic extreme reading photographs. Please do continue to share these with us.

In Collective Worship this morning we are considering 'What is precious?' In these different times I  have definitely had the time to reflect on the things that are very important to me. People and time together with them are definitely my priority not having lots of new things. I am enjoying watching things grown in my garden and can't wait to taste my strawberries and tomatoes.

Good morning children,

It is feeling hot already! In school we are struggling to keep cool. The children have been brilliant at remembering to bring their hats to school and are drinking lots.

Thank you to the children who have sent through photographs of their extreme reading. Please keep sending these in to us.

Good morning children,

Today is due to be another hot, sunny day. I have a challenge for you...

Can you send me a photograph of you reading in an extreme way? It could be in a den, on your bike, in your paddling pool or whilst cooking. Please send photographs to office@holme.cambs.sch.uk

I can't wait to see them.

Good morning children,

Yesterday we had the chance to catch up with our Year 6 pupils via video call. They tell me they have been busy cooking ad helping around the home.

It was lovely to see the children and hear about what they have been up to. We discussed plans for their leaver's assembly. We are certainly having to be creative and technological.

Good morning children,

I hope you have had a fun weekend. I hope you had the chance to spoil your Dad and Granddads this weekend. I have been busy making coffee cakes!

This week is sports week and the teachers have a range of activities planned for the children. I know they have shared some of these with you working at home so do take part if you can.

This afternoon I am meeting the Year 6 children virtually. I am looking forward to seeing them.

Good morning children,

I hope you had a nice weekend and got the chance to enjoy the sunshine with your family. I wonder how many of you met up with grandparents this weekend?

I have a little job for you all. I would like you to help me change the prayer space. I would like you to make me some colourful butterflies to decorate the space with. These can be painted, drawn or made from collage materials.

I would also like some new prayers for our prayer book. Themes to write about include: Our school, our world, friend and families, thank you and  resilience.

Please send photographs  of your work or a word document to Mrs Holmes.

Good morning children,

The adults leading the Bubbles have been telling me about the fantastic work that has been happening around school. The Hedgehog Bubble have been learning about the story of Jack and the Beanstalk , Year 1 have been doing some fantastic writing based on Roger and the butterflies and the Rainbow Bubble have been learning about Charles Dickens.

The staff have been busy preparing for the new children that will be joining us next week.

Good morning children,

I hope you are all well. Today in collective worship we are thinking about doubts and worries. We will look at the story of how Jesus calmed the storm and how God is always there for us. Even though we are spread apart, we are still one school. We are always here for you.

It is important that we also reflect on the positive aspects of lockdown- perhaps you have enjoyed more time with your families, learned something new ( I know a few of you have learned to ride your bike). I am now very good at video calls and Risk Assessments!

Take care

Around the World in 80 Days

Good morning children,

The weather is not so great this morning. The school is open to the Rainbow Bubble only today. So school is a very quiet place.

Please see below for the details about an exciting online theatre production. This would be a great family activity. Perhaps you could design tickets or a poster for the show? Maybe you could write a theatre review and send it into us. Or just cosy up with some popcorn and enjoy the show.

Good morning children,

I know many of you have enjoyed going for family bike rides. Cycling has been a great release for many families during the pandemic and we hope you’ll continue to enjoy cycling with the family and celebrate by taking part in the

Bike Week festivities between 6-14 June. It’s your chance to celebrate all that’s great about cycling.

The latest Government rules say although we have to maintain our social distancing and be at home where we can, unlimited exercise is now permitted.

To help keep families active during this time Cambridgeshire Road Safety Officers are promoting Cycling UK’s free Bike Week resource pack with indoor and outdoor activities you can do as a family. From cooking to colouring, to bike challenges, it’s got it all.

Good afternoon children,

Today I have been chatting to the Rev Dyball and she has been telling me about the amazing things you have been sending to her ready for the special service.

The world is a very different place to what it was 10 weeks ago but there are always things around us we can be thankful of.

Today for me it is the amazing staff, delightful children and supportive parents in our school.

Good afternoon children,

It is lovely sitting in my office hearing the sound of children laughing and playing on the playground.

Today we welcomed back some Reception, Year 1 and Rainbows back into school. The children entered the playground sensibly and lined up on the dots on the snake. This morning we have been talking about the new rules in school and practicing washing hands and walking around the site safely.

The children are enjoying their 'work stations' and feeling very grown up with their own equipment.

If you are still working at home, do continue to share your work, photos and stories with us. You are an important part of our school even though you are not in the same building as us.

Good morning children,

I hope you have all had a sunny weekend with your families. Yesterday, my family completed one of our jar activities- a picnic at Ferry Meadows. We managed to find our own lovely spot away from everyone. We even found the dog agility course.

So much has changed over the past 8 weeks and our lives look very different now to what they did before lockdown.

It is really important that you talk to others and ask for help if things are worrying you.

Remember it is a good thing to spend time doing things that make you giggle and smile. Watching this crazy lot playing always makes me smile.

Good morning children,

Last night I spent some time looking through the class pages at all of your fantastic photographs. You certainly are a creative group of children and you are obviously keen bakers.

Taking time to do things that make you feel calm, good and relaxed is very important during these difficult times. Mrs Dee has put together a range of mindfulness and guided visualisation activities to try at home. Why don't you encourage your grown ups to join in with these also.

My advice would be to put your pets in another room.

Good morning children,

I hope you are all well and ready for a new day. As well as being super proud of the staff and your grown-ups who have stepped into the role of teachers at home, I am extremely proud of all of you. It is not easy working at home, without your friends, resources and teachers- but you are sending in some impressive work.

A special thank you to those groups of children who have helped me with tasks; reading stories for the children, creating videos of our calculation policy, writing prayers and letters. Audrey is currently working on something top secret.

I have two challenges for all of you.

Firstly, to mark mental health week I am asking you to wear purple or decorate your teddy bear with purple accessories next Friday. Who can design a hat?

There is a letter being emailed home about this today. I have uploaded some useful resources for your grownups on the 'wellbeing' page of the website.

Secondly, we have been contacted by the NHS who need our help. Can you donate fabric or sew scrub bags? This would be a great way to give back.

Dear children,

I hope you and your families enjoyed the bank holiday weekend and managed to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the end of World War two in some way. Holme village was decorated beautifully.

It's been announced that phased school returns could happen from 1st of June (after half-term) at the earliest. The Prime Minister has said this will be done in stages, beginning with Reception, Year 1 and Year 6.

I understand that our families will have questions after the announcement. I will be reviewing the guidance the government will publish later and will be in touch with you as soon as possible.

Good morning children,

I hope you and your families are well. We have been away from each for many weeks now and I am missing seeing you all, particularly in the playground playing together at lunchtime.

The teachers are contacting your parents this week to see how you all are. Do talk to your teacher- they are missing you all too.

It is okay to be feeling wobbly at the moment. It would be very easy to stay on tech all day, but trust me you will feel better is you get moving and doing different things. Your parents are in charge of your learning at the moment- but things aren't easy for them either. All I ask is that you try your very best and be kind to those around you.

Don't forget our target of 1000 paper dolls. Do send in pictures for me to see.

Good morning children,

I hope you have had a good weekend with your families. This weekend we planted some tomato and strawberry plants- so I just need to make sure the boys water these each day.

Are any of you growing things at home?

This Friday is a bank holiday and across the country we will be celebrating the 75th anniversary of the end of the second world war. I know Mrs Papandrea has already set Foxes class a challenge this week.

In school we will be creating decorations for the front of the school. Why don't you join in and decorate your homes ready for Friday.

I heard a rumour that the village is having a front garden party- adhering to social distancing of  course. This is a lovely idea and I will definitely be having a tea party.

It looks like we are going to be spoilt by another beautiful sunny day today.

School is very quiet without you all, but the adults on rota are managing to get some long overdue jobs done around the school. We have now turned our attention to the EYFS outside area.

We have sent out a plea of help to parents and residents in the village. We have been inundated with offers of materials. Which is absolutely fantastic. Thank you.

If your family are having a spring clean at the moment we are still in need of:

*2 windbreakers ( for our beach themed sand and water area)

*Buckets and spades

*Coloured paint/ stain for wood

*Flower pots

*Trellis or fencing

*Herbs/ vegetable plants

Effie has been busy making paper dolls, inspired by the book 'The Paper Dolls' by Julia Donaldson. This gave me the idea, that we could create our own collection of paper dolls and assemble them when we return to school. I wonder if between our whole school community (including grandparents and friends) could we make at least 1000?

Good morning children,

Welcome to the Summer Term.

I hope you and your families are well and that you managed to enjoy the Easter weekend together. In the Thomas house we had fun making an Easter garden and having an egg hunt outside in the garden. We have been doing lots of baking, painting and gardening.

Starting today, each Monday morning you will find a weeks worth of activities on each class page so you can choose the order in which you do these.

I am enjoying seeing the photographs of your learning at home. Please keep sending these through to us.

I have also found the link to some of our Friday collective worship songs and thought you might like to teach these to your family. The song for today is Wake up and I have included links to both the song and the dance moves. Enjoy!

Clio and Arran have recommended the live feeds from the Chester and Edinburgh Zoo’s. They have also found another good one to share with us,  go onto Facebook ( with an adult) and search the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical garden.  The Zoo has a massive variety of animals such as hippos, snow leopards, polar bear etc. they are much more informative about the animals and the videos are twice as long.  The keepers can also answer some live questions being posted.
