Owls Class Yr 1/2
Our Summer Term learning
Welcome to Owls Class
We are a mixed Year 1 and Year 2 class.
Our teacher is Mrs Barnard.
Owls are a friendly, enthusiastic and hardworking class who enjoy learning.
Curriculum Overview – Summer Term
English
This term children will be writing to inform through reports and diaries, linking to The Great Fire of London and our Geography topic about Northern Europe. We will also be poets as we create some poetry based on ‘Desk Diddler’.
We will also be continuing to work hard on our handwriting and spelling, following the Year 1 and 2 statutory spelling lists as well as our phonics scheme (see below for more information).
Children will read daily in school as part of our whole class reading lessons, during our phonics lessons and as part of independent reading.
Phonics is taught using the Sounds-Write scheme and is a focus for our writing and reading, alongside our English and comprehension lessons.
Maths
This term children will focus on:
- Multiplication and division, fractions, geometry, place value within 100 and time (year 1)
- Fractions, time, statistics and position and direction (year 2).
Children will regularly explore problem solving and reasoning through a mastery Maths approach as well as regularly recapping and practising fluency skills.
Science
The children will be learning all about ‘Materials and Matter’ as well as becoming astronomers!
History
Children will be focusing on key and influential figures throughout history.
Geography
Linking in with our previous topic on The British Isles, we will be learning all about countries in Northern Europe.
Art
This term we will be focusing on History Art and murals and tapestries.
Computing
This term we will be using PurpleMash to support our learning journey of using computers to create and work with spreadsheets and pictograms and well as to present our own ideas. In addition, we will continue to talk about managing risks and staying safe when using the internet.
Music
This term the children will be using Music Express focusing on the themes of Water, Travel, Weather and Making Patterns.
RE
This term children will be exploring Judaism, asking the question:
Why is the Torah such a joy for the Jewish community? In addition, we will be exploring Christianity, asking the question: Why do Christians trust Jesus and follow him?
Home Learning
Home learning consists of spellings linked to our Sounds-Write phonics for the week, as well as daily reading and an additional basic skills task. Please ensure that you support your child by reading with them at least 4 times a week. Books are changed weekly – the children will bring home 2 books. One which directly relates to our Phonics Scheme and one which relates to their reading age.
Spellings as well as the additional work to support the development of your child’s basic skills will be sent home every Friday.
P.E.
For P.E. I would advise children to wear their outdoor P.E. kit (including trainers) to be prepared for any weather. Regular P.E. sessions with a coach are on Wednesdays, with Mondays being taught by Mrs Barnard. This term we will be focusing on the fundamentals of games as well as learning how to dance with a May Pole!
PSHE
In PSHE we will be learning about how to stay safe, manage risks and how to stay healthy.
